ASTM International has published a new standard, ASTM F2951, Consumer Safety Specification for Baby Monitors, in response to a report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission that seven deaths have resulted from infants strangling in monitor cords when the cord has been placed too close to a crib.ASTM F2951 was developed by Subcommittee F15.68 on Baby Monitors, part of ASTM International Committee F15 on Consumer Products.
According to F15.68 chairman Anthony Paolo, audio, video and motion monitor manufacturers, as well as retailers and consumers, will all benefit from ASTM F2951."All cords must now be labeled with a conspicuous strangulation hazard warning label to remind caregivers that children have strangled in cords and to mount the cord more than three feet away from the crib," says Paolo, vice president, corporate quality, Summer Infant Inc.

ASTM standard calls for warning on baby monitor cords
ASTM International has published a new standard requiring baby monitor cords to carry a label warning about strangulation hazards. The standard is in response to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report that seven infants have been strangled to death by monitor cords, the ASTM said.

HP's Early Infant Diagnosis program enables efficient delivery of test results
Millions of people around the world don't have access to basic health services, and millions more are at risk because of inefficient healthcare systems or inconsistent quality of care.Hewlett-Packard Co. not only recognized the problem but realized that its technology could improve healthcare delivery for many underserved populations. As a result, HP has been collaborating with health authorities to reinvent processes, modernize systems and develop solutions that dramatically expand access, improve care and save lives.
One such HP project is the Early Infant Diagnosis program, which was fully implemented by June 2011.The program, the product of an alliance between HP, the Clinton Health Access Initiative and the Kenyan government, resulted in a system for efficiently diagnosing and treating HIV-positive infants in Kenya. HP also donated the server, storage and networking equipment.Through the HP-developed system, each test sample is assigned a bar code, processed and recorded in a database.
