JPMA launches awareness campaign for baby monitor cord safety

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Assn. has launched a campaign created to make parents and other caregivers aware of the strangulation risks posed by baby audio and video monitors.The campaign follows a recent standard set by ASTM International that requires monitor cords to carry a label about the hazard. According to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report, seven babies have been strangled to death by monitor cords.

The JPMA campaign includes a website, that gives safety tips, advisories and a video in English and Spanish explaining how to safely use a baby monitor. Participating manufacturers in the campaign include Dorel Inds., Evenflo, Fisher-Price, Levana, Mobi Technologies, Motorola, Philips, Sony and The First Years.

"When used safely, baby monitors can help you capture those special moments and provide you with an extra set of eyes and ears on your baby."
