A man who police believe ripped off more than $11,600 in band equipment from two schools last week is in custody.Charles County Cpl. Scott Stricker said detectives will apply for felony criminal charges against the man on Tuesday. Stricker did not identify the suspect but said he was in his early 30s and from the Wentzville area.Band equipment and computers were taken from Barnwell Middle School and Becky-David Elementary School, both situated on Jungs Station Road, Thursday night. Early Friday, a Hillsdale police officer made a traffic stop and arrested the driver.The officer had the man's car towed and noticed the band equipment in the back, Stricker said, but didn't make a connection to the burglaries until the following morning, when he saw a newscast about the incident.
The officer contacted the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department, and on Monday, detectives determined that the equipment in the man's car was the same as what was taken from the schools.Stricker said about 90 percent of the missing equipment had been recovered. He said he did not know what the man's motive was and knows of no connection between the man and the schools.
