Activists opposed to fracking gathered today to discuss strategy and actions that could include hounding public officials in favor of the practice, disrupting meetings and conferences and physically blocking trucks and workers from accessing wells.More than 200 people turned out to discuss how to "defend Boulder County from hydraulic fracturing" at the Boulder meeting, which was organized by several groups and individuals opposed to the process of injecting sand, water and chemicals to free up underground oil and gas deposits. The meeting was largely in response to the Boulder County Commissioners May 21 decision not to extend a moratorium on accepting and processing applications for new oil and gas wells in unincorporated Boulder County. Organizers also wanted to mobilize the community in advance of several upcoming meetings.
Those meetings include oil and gas discussions by Lafayette's and Boulder's city councils on Tuesday night,Outdoor 3G Video Monitoring Alarm System Night Vision and Boulder County government consideration of additional oil and gas regulations on Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon."People are very passionate about fracking," said one of the organizers, Russell Mendell of Frack Free Colorado. "People want to have actions they can take to protect the health of our families. It's pretty clear that the people who live here don't want fracking."Simon Lomax, Denver-based research director for Energy In Depth, countered that researchers and scientists have shown "over and over again that hydraulic fracturing is a fundamentally safe technology."
"The activists can try to change their strategy and try to change their tactics as much as they like 3G GSM Power Alarm System, but it won't change the facts," he said. "The facts are very clear."At today's meeting, those in attendance were urged to go to Tuesday's Boulder City Council to support a one-year moratorium on oil and gas drilling permits in the city and on city-owned open space properties. Suggestions for speakers included advocating for a longer moratorium and asking the council to approve a ballot issue so residents could vote on a permanent ban.Along with GSM GPRS MMS Alarm System With SD Card talking about upcoming meetings, organizers solicited volunteers to help build websites, to fundraise and to get the word out through social media, as well as to help with a possible attempt to recall at least one county commissioner. Commissioners Cindy Domenico and Deb Gardner both voted against extending the moratorium.
