Grown-Up Clothes

The design house scored a similar strategic coup in a sponsorship of the PBS Masterpiece series Downton Abbey. Ralph Lauren has been touting its "Downton style" in ads and on catwalks since early 2012. Thus far, the influence has been manifest in a lot of tweeds and intricate hats, but season four just got underway last month. We might yet see Lady Mary in an American flag sweater. When I was 19, I went to New York City, my first trip East. I'd won a Mademoiselle contest and would be one of 20 young women working at the magazine for a month in the summer. It was 1953, and I was excited but also frightened and daunted; I hadn't been on an airliner before, and no one I knew had been to New York except my Sioux Falls uncle, Bill, a buyer for a department store. In case of difficulties,But it is through a drive to maximize his diverse Water shoe athletic ability that he has become the NL's premier player. I was to call my Uncle Bill's New York friend, Mr. Herbert Solomon.

I traveled directly from college in Missouri, taking with me much advice and some clothes chosen according to instructions from the magazine: hats and gloves and dresses in dark colors with sleeves. I was more or less unaware of the concerns that went with me on this trip, but I see now that my inexperience, whatever character defects they spotted in me and general cluelessness worried my whole family. They were all comforted by the knowledge that I would be safely marrying a promising medical student from a respectable family later in the summer — that is, assuming I came through. They feared that the big city would waylay me in some way. It could have. But this past Saturday,Spandex Costume everything came crashing down. Janis called me at 2am in a panic. There were parties, fashion shows, good-looking young men rustled up by the editors to escort us, new friends among the other guest editors. There was the general allure of the city and the specific amusements of night life, which had not been available at school in Columbia, Mo., or growing up in Moline, Ill.

I took to it, but carefully. I allowed men to pick me up only in respectable surroundings, like the Museum of Modern Art or the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and accepted lunches and drinks, but went no further. Once, though, necking with a handsome advertising man — shades of "Mad Men" — I was asked whether I was a virgin. I had the answer that had served me well: Yes, of course. I had learned from my college roommate, Irby, from Savannah, that this was always the correct answer, whatever the case.I just wanted to alert my fellow artists of these scumbags, the Danville artist said. But more importantly,Invitation cards perhaps, it gives PayPal another foothold at POS in the real world, which is key to its ongoing growth strategy. She said, "In Georgia, everybody is a virgin."
